Artist Statement
My collage work explores form, nature, and the surreal. Through the use of precision cutting tools, densely layered elements, and natural forms, I aim to create compositions with a distinctive form of beauty that evoke movement and curiosity.
At the core of my practice is a desire to escape routine and overthinking. I trust fall into the process. Embracing my intuition and the imperfections and spontaneity that come with cutting and pasting, I allow my pieces to grow organically.
Flowers and leaves hold a special place in my work. The more I try to control them, the less natural they become.
Each collage embodies the time, care, and intricacy I bring to my practice.
Artist Bio
Emily Morgan, the artist behind Lovely But Dead, creates collages as a quiet excavation of the self she lost to years of dependency. With careful cuts, dense layering, and an emphasis on precision over perfection, she crafts intuitive works that range from lush and verdant to dark and introspective.
Emily’s collage practice is bolstered by a strong combination of self-directed education (through teaching and collective leadership), a growing body of curated and juried exhibitions, multiple creative commissions in publishing and music, and consistent recognition from arts organizations and media outlets. Emily lives with her partner, Alex, and their three cats.
