Hiding "dirty" magazines under the mattress is a dated trope related to teenage boys discovering their sexuality. "The Prince And The Pea" is about my coming of age and coming to terms with my homosexuality and the things I might be hiding under MY bed. The reference to the fairy tale "The Princess And The Pea" refers to her inability to sleep due to something under the mattress nagging at her that just won't allow rest - in her case, a pea; in mine an assortment of images from muscle magazines, GQ's, a Liza Minnelli playbill, etc. On top of the bed, hands praying to release me from my affliction and a text from the time I hope will provide insight to my "condition".
About the Artist
I make assemblage art dioramas and sculptures that address memory and identity. Found objects with personal significance serve as a catalyst and become part of an idiosyncratic and symbolic visual language. Engagement in constructing the pieces prompts deeper contemplation leading to a dialogue with the past, and offering a deeper understanding of how it connects to the present moment. These discoveries inspire the inclusion of more objects that support the evolution of the narrative, and the pieces take form. The work is very specifically personal and surreal juxtapositions can make the narrative abstract; however the viewer has their own references and makes their own interpretations, and a story emerges that is as much theirs as it is mine.
