Artist Statement
This piece is about bullying I endured as a gay kid. "I don't care" was what I would tell myself when attacked because "Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me" as I made my way back to the safety of the metaphorical nest and the mother hen at the end of the school day. The text on the box reclaims the taunts and slurs queers have suffered throughout our lives as both children and adults. The existence of the piece indicates survival, overcoming the past and sharing with others what was a not uncommon childhood experience.
About the Artist
I make assemblage art dioramas and sculptures that explore memory and identity. Objects I find with personal significance serve as the catalyst and act as an idiosyncratic, symbolic visual language. Engagement in constructing the pieces prompts deeper contemplation leading to a dialogue with the past and a deeper understanding of its connection to the present. The work is very specifically personal, and the resulting often incongruous juxtapositions can make the narrative seem abstract - however the viewer brings their own associations, makes their own interpretations, and a story emerges that is as much theirs as my own.
