Artist Statement

This work revolves around desire, what we search for, what we crave. The collages set up open-ended stories, tales that the viewer can run with. They resist the easy answers and the plain vanilla, allowing us the freedom to imagine and dream, maybe even a little dangerously.

We shouldn’t have to worry about expressing our ideas or dreams; however, in the current atmosphere, I fear that we are continuously faced with a perceived need to self-censor, conform, and fit in, so as not to challenge the dogma of the left or the delicate sensibilities of the right. I worry that we have created a toxic situation for true creativity.

So this work does not fear, but rather resists those urges by creating joyful friction between need and want, fantasy and reality. Through it, I hope the viewers may reconsider the urge to self-censor their thoughts and, by extension, their lives.

About the Artist

For over thirty years, Stephen Tomasko has been creating photographs, collages, mail art, drawings, and paintings by examining and dissecting history, life, and landscape. In his work, high and low cultures collide and create anew. Examples of his work are held in dozens of permanent collections worldwide, and in 2025 alone, Tomasko had work in over 120 museum and gallery shows in twenty-eight countries.

Stephen is the recipient of an Individual Excellence Award from the Ohio Arts Council. Tomasko serves as the director of the Little Gallery at Bowling Green State University, Huron, Ohio. Tomasko serves as the selection committee chair for the AST artist residency program in Akron, Ohio.
