MEN ARE IN CRISIS uses collage to examine masculinity not as a fixed identity, but as an accumulation of stories, symbols, myths, and anxieties. The work assembles fragments of popular culture, pulp illustration, self-help ideology, crime fiction, internet grievance culture, religion, disaster imagery, and advertising into a chaotic symbolic landscape where heroes, victims, prophets, consumers, and outcasts compete for attention.
Collage is an act of resistance because it rejects the illusion of a single authoritative narrative. Contemporary life is increasingly fragmented, yet we are constantly sold simplified explanations for who we are, who is to blame, and how we should live. This piece pushes in the opposite direction. Rather than offering answers, it exposes the overlapping and often contradictory stories from which modern masculinity is constructed.
The work emerged from the novel Men Are In Crisis, a dark satire about loneliness, identity, grievance, belonging, and the stories people tell themselves when the world stops making sense. Collage became the natural visual language for those themes. It allowed me to excavate the cultural debris of masculinity: cowboy myths, action heroes, self-improvement schemes, sexual anxieties, victim narratives, and apocalyptic fantasies, all piled atop one another until the line between identity and performance begins to dissolve.
By repurposing familiar images and placing them in conversation with one another, the piece transforms cultural leftovers into a collective portrait of confusion, aspiration, fear, and longing. It asks not what men are, but what stories they have inherited, and what happens when those stories start to break apart.
About the Artist
Spiritual Conspiracy creates outsider lo-fi synthwave, darkwave, and sound collage works built from the detritus of the internet and sample culture. Drawing from forgotten media, public archives, conspiracy theories, self-help rhetoric, fringe spirituality, advertising, and cultural ephemera, the project transforms discarded fragments into immersive concept albums and artwork that blur the boundaries between music, documentary, satire, and dream.
Working across themes of technology, identity, memory, belief, masculinity, and social collapse, Spiritual Conspiracy uses collage not simply as an artistic technique, but as a way of understanding a fragmented world.
