I refuse to look away from the problems surrounding us, I wanted to get down to nitty gritty and show what I’m actively seeing. Police brutality, debt, poverty, our medical system is a joke, we introduced total war in a single instant with the a-bomb , some how people are defending racism, and still some how have some type of pride in the way we’re moving as a nation. The norm is to scroll past the problems , and smile at cat videos as the country is on fire. I can not look the other way and i want it all to be shown in 1 photo. Furthermore, the media I’m pulling from is decades old reinforcing how relevant these issues are.
About the Artist
I am Nico, an enby POC musician and artist. In the last couple years I have become drawn to the analog process of collage as a way to sort thru and contextualize all that circles my inner world, our outer world, and beyond, often touching on themes of surrealism, relational scars, identity, social issues and the impact of western culture on the world at large. In a hyper digital world run rampant by the rise of AI and commodified inauthenticity in every corner of media, choosing to go against the grain by foraging for physical media, textbooks, vintage magazines, and lost history allows me to enter a world where imaginative and meticulous energy merge and something profound can be summed up in worlds rather than words. Collaging has taught me patience, acuity, and to remain curious.
