Artist Statement
The source images for this collage have been in my stash of materials collected over the years. As the turmoil and political chaos in our country grew I felt these flag images could be used as a statement, but wasn’t sure how to go about it. I pondered and fretted over what to do each time I revisited them. Recently I learned about “blind collage” which definitely tweaked my interest. The process intrigued me. After doing a few projects using the method, it became clear that blind collage might just be the way to illuminate my thoughts about our country and my feelings about the political upheaval.
About the Artist
From a young age, I thought of myself as an artist. Paper, scissors, crayons, construction paper, anything i could get my hands on, were the beginning. Over the years I learned how to draw with ink, graphite, and charcoal. I took lessons in oils but soon my interest turned to watercolor. The uncomplicated materials and transparency of the medium appealed to me. I collected many drapes and artifacts to arrange still life scenarios. Photos I took helped me compose the close up views of flowers for larger pieces. Painting outdoors on location was another challenge. My work has been shown in several galleries, at outdoor art shows. At various times I was a member of New England Watercolor Society, The Northshore Art Association in, Gloucester, MA, The Rockport Art Association in Massachusetts, Kennebunk, ME, Art Foundation, Maine Women in The Arts, and Oil Painters of America, and also owned my own gallery along with my artist husband, in Boothbay Harbor, ME. In my later years i discovered ink and watercolor “batik” on rice paper. Finally, returning to my beginnings, I am back exploring collage. Still very happily cutting, arranging and gluing.
