Artist Statement

This work is an homage to my queer anti-monogamist community. Visually, it aims to frustrate the reader's gaze, and by doing so prompt them to reconsider the popular scripts about romance, breakups, and sexuality. Its narrative is about moving from heterosexual coupledom to a third space that is neither being single nor coupled. I hope that it encourages readers to reflect on ways that intimacy, domesticity, and political power can mesh as we decide who to share our lives with and how. I want readers to leave the piece with a sense of wonder and possibility at what might exist beyond static, categorical ideas of how humans can relate to each other.

"I'm sick of love; let's fall in politics."

- Clémence x. Clémentine; Against the Couple Form

About the Artist

Michael Loving is a poet and artist in Detroit, Michigan. Their practice of collage aims to use text and image synthetically to create an experience that goes beyond reading an illustrated poem or viewing a captioned image. Most recently they finished the series "Divorce for Dummies", which consists of 30 collage/erasure poems each based on a different page from the book "Divorce for Dummies". This series interrogates the politics of domesticity, intimacy, habit, and power in popular culture. Loving is currently working on a new series based on "The Internet for Dummies".
