Artist Statement

The bible has been increasingly used to justify anti-trans violence with the rise of Christo-fascism. I have dismantled its pages and rearranged scripture to write my own testimony of resistance. As the movement to scapegoat trans people destroys our spaces, our resources, our medicine, and our safety, what endures is our spirit. Unlike our lives, trans-joy cannot be taken without our consent.

The figure, chained in place to a burning stake, defiantly turns towards the vibrancy of nature. Manufactured destruction looms below and threatens the existence of both the individual and the environment. This figure is engaging in the ultimate protest- the refusal to yield our pride, even in our dying breaths.

About the Artist

Malachi is a zinemaker, collage artist, and poet from Northeast Ohio. Their work thematically includes queer identity, religion, sexual pleasure, and reclamation of bodily autonomy. Currently, the main source of their artistic joy is creating queer erotic poetry through analog collage of bible verses.
