Artist Statement
Each day I grow increasingly disgusted at the unfettered corruption that continues to spread through my country’s government like an unchecked parasitic infection. The title of the piece - 558 U.S. 310 - references the 2010 Supreme Court decision to grant “corporate personhood” in the Citizens versus FEC case. The outcome drew political outrage from across the political spectrum, opposed by then-president Barack Obama, John McCain, Ralph Nader, and former president Jimmy Carter, the latter lamenting that the US was now "an oligarchy with unlimited political bribery". With capitalism granted ever more control over the meager allowance of living Americans are allotted, I look to the imbalance of power inherent to patriarchal structures. What decisions do these self-serving men get to make for you and I behind closed boardroom doors? What percentage of their profits is paid for by the suffering of those with no say in the matter?
About the Artist
Laura Ellstrom (b. 1991) is a queer multidisciplinary visual artist currently based in Columbus, Ohio. Their approach to collage is more intuitive than determined, letting the materials inform the outcome by following thematic patterns and synchronistic threads. Within these abstract narratives - exploring topics both emotional and philosophical - Laura aims to inspire inquiry more rather than provide declaration; like in poetry, she believes that sometimes less can say more.
