“A mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam” is a collaged mixed media piece about deep hope and how creating is an active form of resistance. Creating is a radical chance to make something where so often the echo chamber can be focused on the destruction of the places we live, love, and commune. My work is exploring concepts of connection and how we are creatively and cosmically connected to every other living thing and one another in ways that show up in macro and micro ways to the pattern of our lives and the universe. The hexagonal pattern is a repeated shape in my art making practice that symbolize interdependence and interconnectedness. I liken this to my collaging work, the act of taking paper and interacting with something deeply interconnected with nature, trees, and one another through the material act of making/remaking with paper and imagery that can be visually read from many angles. The interdependence shares how even as we navigate the contemporary moment, it is a reminder of collective work and care for one another that can bring us together. This parallels the way collage assembles in new ways in creative resistance work, that we do individually and together! The title is a nod to the last image of Earth taken by Voyager 1 as it left our solar system, it serves as a reminder the incredible vastness and connection as we all live, create, and love together on this mote of dust.
