Artist Statement
This work was designed to bleed a red stain on the hands of those that touch it as metaphor that the blood of the deaths of women from lack of women's healthcare services are on every persons hands in this society. Stained on the fabric represent the blood stains of women bleeding out and women who can't get appropriate healthcare for gynecological issues. Hand written stories and sentiments are on the stained textiles with a larger theme of "You Can't Have My Body". Collaged vintage images of women of all races and socioeconomics with stitches running through them or around them, connect the experience that all women are impacted with the lack of gynecological care in this country. They piece is meant to honor the fight and loss of life that we are experiencing and have experienced in the quest for healthcare equity in America and provoke the truth that equity lies on each persons vote... so does the blood lay on the hands of all.
About the Artist
I am an interdisciplinary media artist and composer whose work bridges studio practice, digital and time-based media, public art, and therapeutic expressive arts. My practice is grounded in storytelling, cultural memory, political commentary and transpersonal inquiry, integrating sound, visual art, motion, and contemplative process. My work has been exhibited throughout North America, with audio and film projects receiving global radio and streaming play. My life is my autobiography, documented in art, sound, image, fibers, film, book and process. Contemplation and observation have been fundamental parts of my life. Opening to transcendent spiritual connection, I possess the ability to compose/arrange music and song, author books and create interdisciplinary media works of art that express what I see in the world.
