Artist Statement
Staying mentally and physically afloat in our world is an act of resistance. This piece is a reflection of the beauty of survival amidst chronic illnesses. The initial inspiration for this was the classic seascape as a reflection of internal state. Sometimes though I try to portray sunny weather I feel like there are varied types of natural disasters happening in different parts of my body simultaneously. I continue to fight very hard for the mobility and degree of health I currently have. My illness affects my memory and I used the medium of collage as a mirror to the experience. Some details are photographic: bold and sharp. Some important forms are hazy and melt with the acrylics into the background. The piece is titled Swim because continuing to work to stay afloat is the only option.
About the Artist
Lampwrecked is a New York based artist whose practice emerges from a background in neuroscience, art history, and psychology. Their work explores signal as noise: the threshold where biological systems process, misfire, and adapt. Instruments, generative systems, and visual work reflect biological experience and the body's relationship to error: the glitch in perception, the loss of sensation, the feedback loops that disrupt information.
Shifting medical circumstance has moved them away from painting and their conceptual practice has expanded outward into browser-based instruments, generative audiovisual work, digital recording, and code.
By day, Lamp is Assistant Director of Gallery Operations at Cycol Gallery in the Lower East Side.
