Artist Statement
Collage is a joyous and hands-on experience for me. My sources are old photographs, vintage papers, historical and modern ephemera. Taking advantage of a background in psychology, the process begins with personal journaling, a distillation of all that I’ve consumed from my life coming out from pen to paper. Then the image and related papers are cut and moved about. I search for the most evocative composition that will connect the disparate fragments while keeping in mind insights gained from journaling. Once a final composition is selected, the pieces are carefully glued in place. The collages explore the personal and political intersections between the interior and exterior, where life’s fault lines signal both the sensual and the searing, both pleasure and pain. My work is personal and passionate. I often think of my young son and what I wish to show him of the world and the struggle to live a creative, fulfilling existence. I choose my family, my work and myself, channeling the calm and chaos of story into images that illuminate my identity.
About the Artist
I am a long-practicing collage artist living and working in the Chicagoland area. I am also a cofounder of and a member of the steering committee for Chicago Collage Community, a group focused on bringing together artists creating collage and assemblage art in the Chicago area. When not focused on raising my young son or immersed in collage, I work full time in a local public library and am passionate about civil rights there and in the larger world. I am all about crafting the most creative life possible for myself and helping others do the same.
