Artist Statement
American Medusa is a collage vessel to hold my emotions as well as a response to the existential crisis of being a woman in contemporary America. It's about the eradication of rights, the stripping of self-determination, power and agency. The focal point is a 3M ad from the 1980's of the Statue of Liberty wearing a respirator mask. This intersects with the gendered symbolism of the White Nuclear Family, Christian Nationalism, the interchangeable narrative of birds and snakes as prey/predator as well as the evolving origin story of Medusa; a monster, a victim- then feminist icon. The imagery arrangement is indicative of my own boiling point. The final image is the only container that can hold the power of my internal feelings. It is my hope that others can engage and interpret this visual expression.
About the Artist
Bridgette Bramlage is a collage artist living and working in Chicago. She is self taught and creates her own independent art practice within the Chicago DIY artist community. Collage is a self-guided exploration of new patterns, challenges and storytelling. Her method is best described as precise cuts and deliberate layering to obscure boundaries in order to create abstract and figural narratives. A devotee to the analog, nothing is digitally constructed.
