Artist Statement
This work is about reclamation of spaces and cultures from surveillance technologies. In our contemporary American landscape, we are under the ever-growing eyes of security cameras, digital algorithms, and police infrastructure. Security Cameras in Vain embraces the power of communal voices, through graffiti, as a means of resistance against this overarching trend of increased monitoring at the hands of private landowners and powerful institutions.
About the Artist
Ben Guidry is a visual artist, musician, and scholar who explores the relationship between ideology, capitalism, and the urban landscape. His work considers the tensions between community and private interests through photography, painting, and mixed media. Influenced by graffiti, gentrification, media theory, and privatized violence, Guidry’s work questions the ownership of physical, digital, and mental spaces.
