Artist Statement
I'm a child marriage survivor, and a member of the nonprofit Unchained At Last. In 2026, the Ohio Legislature considered a bill to ban child marriage in Ohio, and when the bill stalled in committee, Unchained At Last held a protest in Columbus, Ohio, which was featured by the local news. As of June 30, 2026, we still don't know if the bill will pass. Adult men in Ohio can legally marry children and import them from other countries. Adult men in Ohio could legally marry and import a child from the Taliban if they wanted to. It's time to change the system that is designed to commodify children.

Ashley’s work about local news, community resiliency, environment, and culture has been published by numerous outlets. Currently based in Appalachia, she was a 2025 writer-in-residence at the Hindman Settlement School’s Oak Ledge Writing Residency in Hindman, Kentucky.
