Project Description: Under Constraint

Under Constraint uses collage as a refusal of the roles women are trained to perform: beautiful, useful, polite, domestic, intelligent, desirable, quiet. Built from paper, vintage imagery, torn language, thread, lace, beads, and domestic objects.

The pieces examine the soft but constant pressure of compliance. A mouth is stitched and labeled. A lace blindfold becomes refinement as restraint. The materials are pretty, nostalgic, and ornamental, but the work and the women are not obedient.

Collage interrupts and breaks the authority of the original image while rebuilding it into evidence of performance, censorship, and sometimes, refusal to conform.

About the Artist

I am Amy Caicos, a Columbus-area collage artist and photographer working with paper, thread, text, and mixed media. My practice addresses systems impacting women and their self perception: beauty, fashion, etiquette, religion, romance, advertising, and the pressure to become easy to control.

I cut into those systems and expose the underlying machinery: classification, performance, appetite, shame, surveillance, and control. Collage lets me interrupt the image before it finishes telling us what to believe. I am drawn to the moment when something polished starts to fray, when a pretty surface begins giving evidence.

The work is often funny, uneasy, and defiant because obedience has always been staged as good taste. I make objects that refuse to behave.
